ATLANTIC SALMON salmo salar SWIMMING IN BLUE WATER IN QUEBEC

Imagine a fish that starts life in a sparkling river, then travels across the vast ocean, grows super strong, and finally returns home – just like a superhero! That’s the incredible story of the Atlantic salmon!

Their adventure starts in winter, when the female salmon lays tiny eggs in a cozy gravel nest called a “redd”. The male salmon prepares it beforehand using his tail! You can peek at a redd near the bridge, but remember, it’s like a nursery, so keep your distance.

Soon, baby salmon wiggle out of the eggs and hide in the gravel until they’re strong enough to face the world. They grow into “parr”, little fish with cool spots that sometimes get mistaken for trout. They zoom around the river, playing hide-and-seek and munching on insects and bugs.

But guess what? As they grow bigger, they change! They turn into sleek, shiny “smolts”, ready to tackle the big, salty ocean. Salmon have superpowers – they change their bodies to be able to live in salt water, whilst they are still in the freshwater river. In the sea they become fierce hunters, gobbling up fish, squid, and their favourite treat – prawns!

For years, they live the ocean life, getting bigger and stronger, until one day, something amazing happens. They use their super sense of smell like a GPS to find their way back to the very same river where they were born!
Their journey back is not easy. They battle fast-flowing water, leap over waterfalls, and swim like champions against the current. You might even see one trying to jump up the waterfall under the bridge – a real-life salmon superhero in action!

Reaching their birthplace, they start the whole cycle again, laying eggs to bring new salmon into the world. Some manage to return to the ocean for another adventure before coming back to this same river, many years later.
The Atlantic salmon’s story reminds us of the amazing connection between animals and their homes. It’s an awe-inspiring adventure that shows us the beauty of nature and how important it is to protect these incredible fish so future generations can enjoy them.

So next time you see a river, remember the salmon superstars swimming underneath the surface and the amazing journey they take!
